There is an old hymn which says, “I’ve got peace like a river in my soul” and while singing it, I often felt just that way. And then the song stopped.
Peace can often seem to be the most elusive of our desired feelings, as fragile as brittle glass and just as vulnerable to even the most glancing blow. Perhaps because we do not understand what it really is, we seek it in ways that guarantee we will never find it!
There really is no need to find it, for it is never lost. It is an attribute of God in which we exist through our perfect union with God. Peace is forgotten, but never lost. That which is ours in essence, cannot be taken from us; our awareness slips and we experience a momentary lapse of consciousness. Peace endures, even when it seems least evident.
Our task is to willingly return our consciousness to the place of peace within. We can do this by “be(ing) still and know(ing) that I am God,” within us.

QUESTION: What’s love got to do with it?
ANSWER: All you need is love…
Well, the songwriters got it right in one sentence. And it certainly isn’t “just a second hand emotion”! It is the whole of our being. It is the emotion with which we relate to every area of our lives. Whether we say, “I love ice-cream or I love my cat/dog or I love YOU”, we have engaged the whole of our being, mind and heart in an expression of our identity. Our identity as who? Do we just put our first names here, or is the identity beyond what we think we know as our everyday selves?

BOTH! Surprise! It’s the whole of us: the spiritual being having a human experience! The essence of our spiritual self is God–the God of our individualized understanding, who dwells within us, and the flesh and blood God of our bodily self. Mind and heart united in the purpose of letting God be God, in us, as us, through us is what we are here for: God made manifest in its Creation!

How hard is that? Not as hard as we might think. Did you notice the words …”letting God be God”..? The love we desire to express is already who we are, and we can step out of the way of Perfect Love and let it BE the activity of our lives. God needs us so that God’s love can be seen and felt in the world!
If it’s to be, it’s up to me, and you, and all of us!
Right now would be a good time to start!
